Collection includes meeting minutes, printed articles, unpublished manuscripts and a small amount of correspondence.

The Friends of Northwest History formed in 1946 as the Students of Northwest History by Oscar M. Waddell and Fay M. Orton. Waddell was the director of the Eastern Washington State Historical Society. They wanted to create an organization to "encourage public interest in the gallant background of the Evergreen state and the Inland Empire." Cushing Eells was born at Blandford, Massachusetts on February 16, 1810. He graduated from East Windsor Theological Institute in Connecticut in 1837 although he had been licensed to preach on December 14, 1836. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions sent him to the Oregon Territory as a missionary. Rev. Eells married Myra Fairbanks on March 5, 1838 in Massachusetts. William Lewis came to Spokane Falls with his parents in 1884. He studied law at Stanford University and after graduating returned to Spokane to practice. Lewis was one of the founders of the Eastern Washington State Historical Society and served for a time as corresponding secretary. He published many articles on the early history of the Pacific Northwest and Inland Empire. With Naojiro Murakami, he co-edited and annotated "Ranald McDonald" in 1923.
